Web Appendix to Measuring the Perpetrators and Funders of Typosquatting
Many typosquatting domains display pay-per-click links promoting the same merchants that are targeted by typosquatting, a practice we call "self-advertising typosquatting." This page lists popular websites suffering high rates of self-advertising on typo domains. A popular site's self-advertising rate is the proportion of typo domains with pay-per-click ads linking to the mispelled popular domain.
We found the listed typosquatting domains using the search process detailed in Measuring the Perpetrators and Funders of Typosquatting. We built automated systems to classify the revenue sources of each typosquatting domain, as detailed in section 3, and we provide an empirical assessment of self-targeting typosquatting in section 4.1. See also screenshots of self-advertising pages for selected popular domains. All data was collected in July 2009.
